Tabla Set

Tabla is a pair of hand drums played together: the smaller dayan carries the melody-side strokes and the larger bayan gives the bass, bent with the heel of the hand. It is the rhythmic backbone of Hindustani classical music and is just as at home in bhajan, ghazal and Nepali light music.

Key Features

• Pair of drums: wooden dayan and metal bayan
• Laced goat-skin heads with the black syahi patch that gives tabla its pitch
• Tuned by moving the wooden blocks or with a tuning hammer
• Played with the fingers and palms, seated

Ideal For

Students starting tabla lessons, accompanists for bhajan and kirtan, and anyone learning Hindustani rhythm.
